Blue Wave
These images have been a delight to work on. Each is an original piece printed on a translucent skin, then overlaid onto sterling silver or white gold leaf.
I started this project earlier this summer based on my interest in "kintsugi", which is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, which makes the object both stronger and more beautiful.
People, like pottery, can become stronger in rejoining the broken pieces, and there is beauty in revealing the repair (and the vulnerability). Those of you who know my journey understand that finding strength in brokenness has been a recurring theme in my own life over the last 8 years.
Ultimately, I chose silver and white gold for reasons of palette and balance, and it also seemed more egalitarian. "Repair with something precious but also accessible to most of us" is what kept coming up for me. Gold began to feel too valuable and limited in this global time of upheaval, repair and reinvention.
I also sense that our nation is on the verge of healing and reconnection. It is my hope for our country that inspired these images.
